We work with most of the common species of wood including maple, oak, ash, and pine. Some of the exotic wood species we work with are redwood, walnut, cherry, Chinese elm, and many more. The different textures and grains of each wood create multiple looks and finishes. To make your perfect piece will take the perfect wood species.
Woodturning is an ancient practice, but with the introduction of the mechanical lathe people began to make woodturning into an artistic form, using woods' natural beauty to make bowls, vases, and artistic pieces.
Using natural defects in trees such as disease damage and storm damage can give a woodturner a canvas with different grains and effects which can be converted to beautiful lines and a great canvas to make uniquely beautiful pieces of art.
With over 40 years in the construction business and experience in Horticulture, Doug has made a great living constructing beautiful homes and his cabinetry work is impeccable. His love for working with wood was born from this and from this experience, he has turned his passion into a new love of woodturning beautiful pieces of art. The photos show some of Doug's Construction works of art in the building industry. Now with Doug's new passion, he has created another company that will be happy to create a woodturning piece of art for you.
Doug's Woodturning is committed to working with wood to create a beautiful piece that will bring the natural beauty of wood to new levels, providing people with the ability to display the pieces, which will enhance the beauty of your space.

In woodturning, you use a wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around an axis. Like the potter’s wheel, a wood lathe is a simple machine that lets you create a variety of forms limited only by your imagination.
Many things formerly created in turning shops have been supplanted by automated industrial production. Today, small-scale turning enterprises and individual artisans create one-of-a-kind art pieces as well as useful spindle and faceplate turnings in limited quantities. In many regions of the world, lathes are tiny and portable, allowing turners to travel to the source of the wood or set up in a temporary work location. A talented turner can create a vast range of items with just five or six simple tools. The tools can also be flexibly altered to fit the work at hand.

There are many dangers to woodturning. With proper training and sharp tools, it can be a safe and fun way to spend your time. You will be working with powerful machines and very sharp tools, so the potential for serious injury is very real. Taking your time to make sure your shop is orderly and safe takes time, but pays off in the long run. One of the most dangerous parts is that many wood particles or wood dust can be very toxic to your skin, especially if you breathe them in, so proper face masks at times and superb ventilation are a must when woodturning or working with wood in general. For the most part, you can take precautions to make woodturning as safe as it can be, and the joy of your finished product is worth all the hassle of making it as safe as possible.
