Doug uses the inspiration and beauty of nature to create his own unique artistic visions. He takes the time to look for bark inclusions in damaged trees and spatting (dark streaks that follow the pattern or the grain) to create the ideal piece. Doug converts distressed wood and turns it into a beautiful work of art.
Wood turning is an ancient practice and with the advent of the modern electrical lathe, wood turning has become a form of artistic expression. Using wood's natural beauty, Doug looks for unusual grain patterns, bark inclusions and stress points and incorporates these irregularities into creating an original work of art.
The majority of the wood that Doug uses is repurposed after being removed by tree trimmers. Doug gives theses downed trees a second life by shaping and finishing them to reveal their natural aesthetic and to provide a piece to be displayed to enhance a home or place of business.
Doug's horticultural background gives him an insight into the ideal species of trees to use for turning. After a trip to a tool show in 1991 he was inspired to start turning. He has attended various symposiums and advanced demonstrations on the subject. Doug uses his imagination and enthusiasm, as well as the experience from hours of turning, to bring about these alluring shapes.
